This Brown Queen | Lupita Nyong’o

“No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.” ~ Lupita Nyong’o

The supremely talented and absolutely gorgeous actress Lupita Nyoung’o won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress last night for her role in 12 Years a Slave. Watching that moment on Sunday was…magical to say the least. I’ll be honest, I’ve never been much of an Oscar fan. Besides the red carpet, what’s there to watch? This year, however, I was watching. With 12 Years a Slave being up for multiple nominations including Best Picture (which WON!) and its immensely talented black cast and director, I WAS watching. Most specifically for Lupita.

Winning an Oscar as a brown girl is no light feat. But this…this is SO much bigger than that. Lupita, a brown girl with gorgeous dark brown skin and kinky natural hair has awakened the standard of beauty for black women. THIS is the image that our little brown girls needed to see. I was literally crying (ya’ll know I’m emotional) when Lupita in her gorgeous dress graced that stage after her name was announced. My heart was racing, I was beaming, I had chills listening to her speech. I wanted to capture that moment, bottle it up and give it to every single brown girl that has ever felt they weren’t good enough or pretty enough because of the texture of their hair or the darkness of their skin. I wanted to give this moment, this feeling, this joy to them. Lupita has won! Not only an Oscar but a victory for brown girls everywhere.

Many congrats, prayers, and love to Lupita! And to brown girls everywhere this is only the beginning!

Stay Blessed beautiful people!
